FAQ

  • How do I book a tattoo appointment?

Complete our booking form either on your chosen artist's page or at darkwater.ink/contact-us.

If you know which artist you want, select them from the dropdown. Not sure? Choose "Undecided" and we'll match you with someone whose style fits your vision. Each artist manages their own calendar, so submitting a form puts your project directly in front of them.

How far in advance should I book?

Our lead artists typically book 6+ months out due to high demand. Other talented artists on our team often have openings within weeks or even same-week availability. If you're traveling to the Bay Area for your tattoo, note your dates on the form—many artists can arrange clustered sessions. If you’re feeling spontaneous, submit a booking form and we’ll do our best to accomodate you.

    Do you accept walk-ins?

We're primarily appointment-only to ensure each client gets dedicated time. When same-day spots open up, we post them on Instagram Stories @darkwater.ink.

Do I need a consultation before my tattoo?

It depends on your artist and project. Some offer free consultations, others consult only after receiving a deposit, and some skip consults entirely. For large-scale work, cover-ups, or body suit planning, we often recommend a consultation. Email info@darkwater.ink if you need specifics about a particular artist.

  • How much does a tattoo cost?

Pricing depends on size, complexity, and artist. Flash and small pieces often receive a fixed quote after we review your request. Large or multi-session work is typically charged at an hourly or day rate. To get an estimate, send us your concept, size in inches, placement photos, and any reference images. Your preferred artist will do their best to provide an estimate but please remember that the final price will be the result of a number of factors including size, pain tolerance and ability to let the artist work without interruption, skin type/location. For any more details please reach out to us or your artist.

    What's your deposit policy?

Deposits secure your appointment and are applied to your final session cost. Each artist has specific policies regarding transfers, notice windows, and forfeiture—these details are shared when you're scheduled but are also available on artists’ websites (which you can find via their artist page under the faq section on our site) .

What payment methods do you accept?

Payment options vary by artist and will be outlined during booking. Most accept cash and card; some also accept digital payments.

  • How do I choose the right tattoo artist for my style?

Start by identifying the style you want: fine line, blackwork, illustrative, or custom body work. Browse our artists' portfolios to find someone whose aesthetic matches your vision. Each artist at Dark Water has a distinct voice and specialty. Not sure? Select "Undecided" on the booking form or email us—we love helping clients find their perfect match.

What's the difference between fine line and traditional tattoos?

Fine line tattoos use thinner needles and delicate linework to create subtle, often minimalist designs. They're perfect for detailed work, small tattoos, or realistic elements. Traditional tattoos feature bold lines and solid colors designed to stand the test of time. Our artists specialize in contemporary styles including fine line, heavy blackwork, dot work, color and more.

  • Does getting a tattoo hurt?

The sensation varies by person and placement, but most describe it as a scratchy, warm, or vibrating feeling rather than sharp pain. Areas with more muscle (upper arm, calf, thigh) tend to be less sensitive than bony areas (ribs, ankle, spine). We encourage breaks as needed, and the endorphins often make it easier as you go.

How long does a tattoo appointment take?

Session length depends on the design's size and complexity. For exsample, a small micro-realism tattoo may take as long as a half-sleeve black-out:

    • Small, simple pieces: 1-2 hours

    • Simpe palm-sized designs: 2-4 hours

    • Half-sleeve, intricate or large pieces: 4-6 hours

    • Full day sessions: 6-8 hours with breaks

Your artist will estimate time during the booking process.

What should I know before my first tattoo?

Come well-rested and fed—your body handles the process better when you're nourished. Avoid alcohol the night before. Wear comfortable clothes that allow easy access to the area. Bring water and snacks for longer sessions. Most importantly, don't hesitate to speak up if you need a break or have concerns.

  • Can I bring my own tattoo design?

Absolutely! We love when clients bring references, sketches, or inspiration images. Your artist will adapt your ideas to work perfectly with your body's anatomy and ensure the design ages well. Most pieces here are custom-created specifically for each client.

When will I see my tattoo design?

This varies by artist. Most finalize designs close to your appointment to ensure perfect placement and flow with your body. Minor adjustments on the day are normal, and there's never pressure to proceed if something doesn't feel right.

How do custom body suits work?

    Body suit projects involve:

    • Initial planning: discussing vision, motifs, coverage, and budget

    • Phased approach: sessions sequenced for comfort and visual continuity

    • Composition planning: negative space and flow designed to age gracefully

    • Ongoing collaboration: the design evolves as we progress

  • How should I prepare for my tattoo session?

Week before: Stay hydrated, moisturize the area daily, avoid sunburn, and let us know about any medication changes.

Day of: Eat a good meal beforehand, bring water and snacks, wear clean clothes that provide easy access to the area. Skip the fragrances—we work in close quarters.

    Can I use numbing cream?

Numbing products are only used at your artist's discretion. If approved, you must follow their exact instructions for application. Using numbing cream without approval can affect how the ink settles. It is not advised to arrive to your session pre-numbed.

Can I bring someone with me?

Our maximum occupancy is very limited. One guest may be allowed if your artist approves in advance, on rare occasions we can have enoug space to host more. Please ask when booking.

  • What can I do during my tattoo appointment?

Most clients listen to music (bring headphones), audiobooks, or chat with their artist. We provide some fidget toys to help distract from the tattooing!
Phone use is fine but take calls outside. We encourage respectful photos and videos—tag @darkwater.ink! We're also happy to capture the process for you.

How often can I take breaks?

As often as you need! We'd rather you speak up than try to tough it out. Staying comfortable helps you sit better, which helps us create better work.

  • Artists each have their own healing procedures they may provide you with. For the shop’s, please follow Dark Water’s standard healing procedure.

  • Do you offer free touch-ups?

Touch-up policies vary by artist. Most offer complimentary touch-ups within 6-12 months for normal healing. Email your artist or info@darkwater.ink for guidance.

Can you cover up an old tattoo?

Often yes, depending on the existing tattoo and your new concept. Successful cover-ups usually need to be larger and darker than the original. Send us straight-on photos with measurements. We may recommend laser fading first for best results—we can provide referrals.
